Wisconsin Woman Wins Age Discrimination Settlement of $32,500

Written by: Previant Law Firm

After almost 40 years working as a billing specialist for Computer Systems, LLC, 60-year old Sharon Passon thought she had job security. In April of 2010, her world was turned upside down when she was fired by her employer and replaced by a less-qualified younger employee. A settlement entered in U.S. District Court held that Passon’s employer had discriminated against her, ordering the company to pay Passon $32,500 in damages. Milwaukee employment lawyers understand the challenges posed by today’s difficult economy and can help you if you have been discriminated against by your current employer or while job-seeking.

The federal Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) of 1967 protects employment applicants and current employees aged 40 and older from discrimination in several different employment stages, including: hiring, promotion, salary determination, termination, employment terms, conditions or perks. Congress passed this law specifically to protect older workers in a rapidly evolving economy and to emphasize the benefits older workers bring to the workforce — namely their abilities and extensive experiences.

In addition, age is just one of several characteristics that Wisconsin state law prohibits from discriminatory use in the employment setting. Wisconsin’s employment Statute 111.321 prohibits discrimination based on these additional characteristics:

  • Age
  • Race
  • Creed
  • Color
  • Disability
  • Marital status
  • Sex
  • National origin
  • Ancestry
  • Sexual orientation
  • Arrest or conviction history
  • Military service

If you suspect you have been discriminated against by your current or potential employer, skilled employment lawyers in Milwaukee can help determine if you have a viable case and whether you are entitled to compensation.

In these turbulent economic times, protecting your livelihood has gained additional importance. Our determined lawyers at The Previant Law Firm, S.C. will diligently investigate the alleged discriminatory actions to determine the best course of action. Call us today to schedule your initial consultation.
